This year, 2025, marks the 100th anniversary of the first official pheasant hunting season in Iowa. To celebrate this centennial, Des Moines County Conservation has partnered with the Aldo Leopold Pheasants Forever Chapter to host a youth pheasant hunt on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at Huron Flats.
This event is a fantastic opportunity for young, aspiring hunters to experience the thrill of the hunt in a safe and supportive environment. The day will begin promptly with a mandatory safety meeting at 7:00 AM. Attendance at this meeting is required for all participants.
This event is open to youth hunters who are Iowa residents, 15 years of age or younger. They must be accompanied by a licensed adult who is 18 years of age or older. While the youth hunter does not need a hunting license or stamps, the accompanying adult must have a valid hunting license and habitat stamp if normally required.
Please note: RSVP is a must! Space is limited, so be sure to register in advance to secure your spot.

It's that time of year again. The air is crisp, the leaves are changing, and the fields are calling. The thrill of the hunt is in the air, and we want you to experience it with us.
Join Hook & Hunt University for a pheasant hunt at the beautiful Huron Flats Wildlife Area in Oakville, Iowa, on October 25th at 7:00 a.m. We're excited to announce that we are partnering with the Aldo Leopold Chapter of Pheasants Forever to bring you this event.
Imagine the scene: The sun is just rising, casting a golden glow over the fields. Your hunting dog is at your side, its tail wagging with anticipation. The rustle of dry grass signals a flush, and with a cackle, a rooster pheasant takes to the air. It's a moment of pure adrenaline and focus, a timeless tradition we get to share together.
Before you join us, there are a few things to keep in mind. You'll need to have completed your Hunter's Education course and have all your proper state licenses—a small game hunting license and a habitat fee stamp. Also, remember to wear blaze orange to stay safe in the field.
This isn't just a hunt; it's a chance to connect with fellow students who share a passion for the outdoors and make memories that will last a lifetime. Get your gear ready, and let's make this a hunt to remember!
Date: October 25th Time: 7:00 a.m. Location: Huron Flats Wildlife Area, Oakville, IA
