Applications must be filed with the Sheriff of the county in which you reside.

Permit to Carry

A new permit to carry requires a fee of $50 and a valid driver’s license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation. It also requires a training class taken within the previous 24 months or a DD214 with honorable/under honorable discharge. The permits are valid for five years from the date of issue.

If the permit is denied, $10 will be reimbursed to the applicant. The Sheriff's office will retain the remainder for processing and handling of the application

The Sheriff’s Office will retain the remainder for processing and handling of the application. If a renewal permit to carry is denied, $5.00 will be reimbursed to the applicant. The Sheriff’s Office will retain the remainder for processing and handling of the application.

Permit to Aquire Weapons

A permit to acquire weapons requires a fee of $40 and a valid driver's license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation. A permit to acquire is valid for 5 years from the date of issue. 

If the purchase permit is denied,  there is no refund to the applicant. The Sheriff’s Office will retain the fee for processing and handling of the application.

Below you will find the Weapon Permit Applications. Print off the Weapon permit form that you are applying for, fill out the forms, sign, date, and mail them back to our office. Please make sure you provide us with your phone number in case we need to get ahold of you. You will need to enclose a check or money order for the appropriate amount made out to the Des Moines County Sheriff along with a color copy of your Driver’s License with your current Des Moines County address. You may also find the applications on the Iowa Department of Public Safety Web Site.

Permit to Carry is a $50.00 fee, renewal permits are $25.00, you will need to apply 30 days before or 30 days after your permit expiration date to be eligible for a renewal permit. When applying for a new Permit to carry, you will need to also include your Training Certificate which cannot be more than 2 years old.

Permit to Acquire is a $40.00 fee.
