May 2026 Department Updates
Spring is in full swing at DMCC, here’s a look at what’s been happening and what’s ahead!Jacklyn Wolken, Conservation Technician
A big thank you to everyone who attended the I Heart County Parks Banquet earlier this month. This event plays a vital role in supporting park maintenance and environmental education programming, and we truly appreciate the continued support from our community!
Camping & Cabins
All three campgrounds are now open for the season: Big Hollow Recreation Area, 4th Pumping Station, and Welter Recreation Area (Sycamore Loop). DMCC also offers two cabin rental options. The Wilson Off-Grid Cabin provides a more rustic, primitive experience, while the Ranger Cabin offers full amenities for a comfortable stay.
Starr’s Cave Nature Center
The Nature Center is open Saturdays and Sundays from Noon–4 PM through September. Stop in to explore the second-floor exhibits, cool off after a hike, or chat with staff about what you’re seeing in the parks. We’re also looking for volunteers to help staff weekend hours. If you’re interested, contact Marcus at 319-753-5808. It's a relaxed and rewarding way to give back to your community!
Summer Camps
Summer camp registration is open, and there are still spots available in several sessions. Be sure to check availability and get your kids signed up!
Upcoming Programs
Spring Fishing Clinic
May 9 | 9 AM–Noon | Big Hollow Recreation Area
This beginner-friendly clinic covers the basics of shore fishing, including equipment setup and casting techniques. We’ll meet at the campground playground. Gear will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you have it.
Pollinator Plug Planting
May 23 | Noon–1 PM | Starr’s Cave
Join us for a special planting event to create a pollinator demonstration plot in memory of Kevin Russel. Funded through memorial donations, this project will grow into a vibrant habitat for bees, butterflies, and birds. Prairie Roots Landscaping will be on-site to lead the planting and share tips on native plants, maintenance, and starting your own pollinator garden.
Field Crew Update
The field crew has been hard at work preparing for the busy season. River docks are being readied and will be installed as water levels allow. Crews have also been grading and rocking park roads where needed. Meanwhile, our Natural Resource Manager has been planting food plots and conducting prescribed burns when conditions are right.
Environmental Education Update
Naturalist Shania recently celebrated her one-year anniversary with the department! April was a busy month for the EE team, with events like the Donate Life 1 Mile/5K, a Wildflower Hike, and a visit from the Quad Cities Ladies Adventure Group. DMCC also participated in the Earth Day Cleanup in downtown Burlington. Spring field trips are now fully booked through the end of the school year, and the team is shifting focus to preparing for summer camps.
Be sure to follow Des Moines County Conservation and Starr’s Cave Nature Center on Facebook to stay up to date on programs, events, and everything happening in your county parks!
