Hook & Hunt University Fishing Clinic – May 10
Join Des Moines County Conservation at Big Hollow Recreation Area for a morning of fishing. As part of the Hook & Hunt Mentorship Program, the event is open to anglers of all skill levels — no experience is required. Bait and tackle will be provided, with mentors available to offer guidance.
The schedule includes registration starting at 8:00 A.M., a seminar at 9:05 A.M. featuring tips and tricks from expert anglers, and fishing from 9:30 to 11:00 A.M. The event takes place at the ADA jetty next to the canoe launch at Big Hollow Recreation Area. The event is free, and registration is optional but encouraged to help with equipment and logistics planning. Register here!
Mayday! Marathon! Run/Walk – May 17
Kick off the season with a challenge at DMCC’s Mayday! Marathon! Run/Walk on May 17 at Starr’s Cave Park and Preserve. Whether you're an experienced runner or just looking for a fun way to get moving, this event offers a variety of courses to suit all skill levels. Choose from a 1 mile, 5K, or a half marathon and take in the breathtaking scenery of one of the county’s most picturesque parks.
This event is the perfect opportunity to test your endurance while immersing yourself in the beauty of Starr’s Cave. Plus, there’s nothing quite like the sense of accomplishment that comes with crossing the finish line. Sign up today and start training for an unforgettable race!
Dutch Oven 101 – May 29
Get ready to turn up the heat and dig into the art of Dutch oven cooking! Join us Thursday, May 29th from 6:00–8:00 PM at the Starr's Cave Nature Center Picnic Shelter for a fun, hands-on evening learning how to cook delicious meals over a campfire using traditional cast iron Dutch ovens.
Led by our new Naturalist, Shania, you’ll prep, cook, and taste three mouthwatering recipes—all while enjoying the scenic backdrop of Starr’s Cave. Whether you're a seasoned camper or just curious about outdoor cooking, this class is a perfect way to spice up your skills.
Cost: $30 per participant. Space is limited to 12 people, so sign up early to save your spot around the fire!
Outdoor Youth Jamboree – June 7
Looking for an action-packed day of outdoor adventure? Bring the whole family to the 2025 Outdoor Youth Jamboree on Saturday, June 7, at Big Hollow Recreation Area. This free, family-friendly event runs from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. and is filled with exciting, hands-on activities designed to connect kids and families with nature and recreation opportunities.
Try out instructor-led shooting sports, including rifle and shotgun ranges, archery, and BB gun shooting. Get on the water with canoeing, fishing, and boat rides, or explore the land with a story hike and pond study. Don’t miss out on observatory tours, meeting a live animal, and conservation education activities presented by local and statewide organizations.
The day kicks off early with a 5K run at 8:00 A.M. (registration/fee required). Free lunch, snacks, and drinks will be available while supplies last. Plus, this event coincides with National Trails Day, making it the perfect excuse to explore the outdoors, discover new hobbies, and create lasting memories with family and friends.
Burlington River Days – June 12–14
For the first time ever, Burlington River Days is making waves in the community! From June 12th to 14th, head to downtown Burlington for an exciting celebration of the area’s deep-rooted boating and river culture. The festival will feature free concerts throughout the weekend, with multi-platinum rock band Saliva headlining on Saturday night. Other performances include Jive Radio, Jake Clayton, and Fivefold.
A carnival will offer rides, games, and classic fair food for all ages, while the farmers market will showcase local produce and baked goods. The boat show will display a variety of impressive watercraft, leading up to a boat parade where boats will make their way down Jefferson Street. The River Days Olympics will bring a competitive edge to the event, featuring outdoor-themed challenges hosted by local conservation and recreation organizations.
Instead of traditional tickets, attendees can purchase a $40 all-access pass, which gets the buyer a chance at the "Boatload of Prizes" giveaway, the grand prize for which is a new boat. Plus, ticket holders get VIP access to the concerts, free drinks at the shows, plays at the River Days Olympics challenges, and other perks at local businesses. Tickets can be purchased online here or at Starr's Cave Nature Center.
